ROC (Rab) Mountain Marathon 2015

A really, really good event, nothing constructive to say at all, just praise all round. Unforgiving terrain, plenty of tactical choices, parts of North Wales I’ve never been to and loads of friendly competitors and marshals. I couldn’t be happier, even if you’d given us all a wreath and a kiss as we came in to download. Same again next year, please!
Phil W

Firstly I would like to say thanks for organising such a great event. U have never competed in a mountain marathon before and it was brilliant fun – I will be doing more in the future I should think!

Regarding feedback for the event – the attention to detail with biodegradeable and compostable plates / forks, as well as good recycling facilities made me think it was being done with a real environmental effort.
The food was great and in good amounts, camping well organised and a good vibe throughout.

Well done on organising the weather too!
Jamie B

Appreciated the very clear instructions about the use of GPS as generally there is a lot of interpretation required to understand what the organiser means – left mine at home.

Brilliant event too – so much more fun than the OMM!. Really appreciate the ability to choose own start time – no being stuck in the toilet queue fretting as your watch moves closer to your start time!  Harveys map was excellent – particularly liked the stronger / thicker plastic.
Chris

Another fantastic event, thank you.  Only my third but it has become something I look forward to all year.  Having no friends, I particularly value the opportunity to run solo.
The scores of marshals – presumably mostly volunteers – were unfailingly cheerful and encouraging and deserve huge thanks.
Richard H

Firstly many thanks for organising such a great weekend in Snowdonia. It was my first Rab MM, but it definitely won’t be my last. The organisation overall couldn’t be faulted, the marshals were really friendly, the course well designed, the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly and the weather was the icing on the cake. We both had a really good time. The Glyders day was my favourite which we chose to do on Day 2.

Totally agree with your stand on GPS phones in mountain marathon events. Any GPS phone should be kept sealed in a bag and used for emergencies only.
Keep up the good work and hope to see you at some future events.

Tim N

I just wanted to say what a fantastic time I had last weekend. I'm totally out of shape, have never done one before, and made loads of silly mistakes-dibbed checkpoints that weren't on, kept contouring over boulders, lost half our points, and so on. Despite all that I loved the steep, rough terrain and I've certainly learnt a few lessons about picking my routes. I'll definitely be back next year as, glorious weather and scenery aside, I really liked the way the event was organised. It seems very good value for money to me, and felt carefully considered rather than overly fussy. I'm sorry to hear there have been some problems around GPS as I thought your guidelines were very clear, as also goes for crossing boundaries.
Ella K

Can I first say what a fantastic event you put on. I am not very good at map reading but my husband is ok I am trying to learn and I'm very very keen
Annie M

I loved the atmosphere at event camp, it was relaxed, organised, friendly and I was so pleased to see the smiling faces of the marshals – happy yellow jacket sight.

Very positive experience for my first MM – the terrain wasn’t too difficult, but that’s my view.  The weather made things so much simpler for us runners – I was warm at night and judged my kit right.  I had too much food, but hey.  What a lucky go at a first MM.
Kate W

I would most of all like to say a huge thank you to you all for organising the event. This was my first Rab and I throughly enjoyed it. All of the marshals I talked with were enthusiastic and welcoming and the organisation very good. A very friendly event, as promised!

Amazing location, a completely new area for me and I personally found it tough. That's as it should be, of course, and I was glad of the score format so that I could manage my own days. I think the split north/south worked really well as I was able to spend long periods alone in the hills, only coming across others at checkpoints.
Richard

Thanks for organising a fantastic event, I really enjoyed all aspects of the weekend.
I really enjoyed reading the race director’s report and getting to see the other side of things. Although my behaviour is perfect in all aspects, obviously!, it has made me think about GPS, walls and helping others. I didn’t take my phone with me, keeping me out of that problem, and the most important/enjoyable aspect of the event for me is the navigation. I would support your firm line on GPS devices

Scott M

I’m still kicking myself for taking the scenic route on day 2 (funnily enough I was completely on my own for that section!) when I could have trotted along the road for 5K before hitting the hills – and scoring more points, more easily. But hey, maybe next time I’ll be more ruthless in the pursuit of points. Did I just say ‘next time’?? Thought this was a one-off, but find I am thinking about next year…
The views were spectacular, the terrain wonderfully varied and some of the controls were a bit tricky. Challenging stuff.
All marshals friendly helpful and very encouraging.
It’s been great for me after a year off with a foot injury and generally feeling old and weary to realise that I can still take to the hills and enjoy myself. Huge confidence booster!
Thanks again.

Ella B

Thank you for organising another excellent event.
Positive
• a good race/exam/test should give a spread of results, challenging for the outstanding yet accessible to the more 'stop and look at the view' competitors. Your event did that.
• The bottles of water at the overnight camp were a treat
• Sunday lunch was delicious
• The runners were really spread out which meant there was less following and more map reading.
• Marshals were very encouraging and friendly
Negative
• Only my lack of skill, must improve my map reading and trust my compass!
Thanks again

Katherine Walker

Many thanks for an amazing event last weekend. It was really well organised and everything went seamlessly. The weather could not have been better either! All in all it was a great event and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The course was really tough, but I guess that is to be expected from that part of Snowdonia, the terrain was great and the course, although being very difficult, took some amazing routes through very dramatic scenery, a great location choice!
The films on the Friday night were a great addition to the weekend, and the films were very inspirational!

Ross B

I have competed in all the RAB MMs to date and hope to continue doing so.
Thank you for another great event and especially for the weather!

Clare H

Thanks for the prompt to give you some feedback. I should start by saying that this was the first MM that I've done, so although I don't have a yardstick against which to measure it, I really, really enjoyed the whole weekend.
Andy

Many thanks to all involved for a completely fantastic 2015 event – only my 3rd MM and first solo – a real but fantastically memorable challenge. I come to mms from mountaineering for nav and fitness training and weekend mountain fun – so the true proper mountain elements in this event were fantastic for me – a real mountain rather than a upland/moorland marathon which seems really to be a more fitting description normally. Thanks so much again, and well done to everyone involved – superb organisation and velvet smooth running as far as i could see.
Richard S

Many thanks for a great weekend, and a lot of fun. Good location and well organised. Thoroughly enjoyed myself (well, with hindsight anyway), even if the Glyders did kill off my favourite Inov8 trainers which fell apart. Personally I found the weekend excellent and your team first class. I'd be most grateful if you could pass on my thanks to the team – great work, thank you all!
Guy

The RAB MM was great really well organised things I particularly liked.
Plenty of toilets (on the OMM you have to factor a half hour queue for the loo in your getting ready preparations).
Love the start when you are ready idea –
The water at overnight camp was plenty
The area was fantastic – the beauty of a smaller event.
The prizes are excellent the best for any MM

Mandy G

Thanks for another great weekend at the RAB Mountain Marathon. It was an interesting one given the split in the event area, but given the scores were so close, it was clearly well balanced so well done to you and Dave Taylor on the planning. My only other feedback is that the maps were great. They were really robust and whilst the weather wasn't too testing, the maps and printing would appear to hold up well in the wet. It makes a difference not having to faff with a bag or worry about the map disintegrating once folded.

ROC (Rab) Mountain Marathon 2014

"Cheers for putting on an epic event, loved every moment of it. Definitely my favourite mountain marathon!"
Matty Brennan‎

“Just wanted to say thank you for such a fantastic weekend, outstanding course planning and event management! The course area and control locations were a revelation with surprisingly contrasting terrain covered from day 1 to day 2. The atmosphere was terrific and the organisation couldn’t be faulted; from the great beer on the Friday night to the finishing meal. Top marks to all involved… I'll leave you with a comment from out on the field, it was along the lines of: "Shane is really putting on first class events; it's great to know he's behind an event as you know it'll be outstanding" I have to admit that I couldn't agree more."
Chris Baynham-Hughes

"A massive thanks to everyone involved in organising and mobilising this fantastic event. As a paricipant I'm always appreciative of those who dedicate their time and energy to create such activities so that others can benefit and gain satisfaction from taking part. I didn't enter with any realistic aspirations of winning (in any category!). My goals were to challenge myself mentally and physically and to build upon my experience (and mistakes) from last year. To improve my navigation skills, my ability to focus, my concentration and to trust my own judgement under (time) pressure.
As a competitive soul, higher points and a higher placing would have been great, but to have achieved the goals I set for myself this weekend have been more than ample reward.
In addition to the organisers, I extend my thanks to the various other competitors whose help and advice I took en route – a spirit of teamwork and helpfulness seems to unite all participants in the RAB MM – a truly friendly event. Despite knocking on the door of 50, and only my second RAB MM, I will be back for a third. Why?
Well, to paraphrase Mallory… "Because it's there"."

Kevin Hogarth‎

"A big thank you to Ourea Events and all who made it happen."
Stephen Burt‎

"@RabMM_Event and Shane Ohly, all marshalls and the caterers. Thank u for a top weekend c u nxt yr?"

"My 5th Rab and first long score – absolutely loved it (apart from maybe that climb out from kentmere reservoir in a panic to get back in time!). Great job Shane and thank you RAB for the super generous prize. Thank you x."

"The 2014 Rab Mountain Marathon was a fantastic two day feast of mountain running and navigation.  The course planner had done an amazing job, offering oodles of route choice requiring both mountain and fine navigation.  I loved the contrast between the two days, day one being more of the traditional mountain marathon terrain with loads of climbing and some high tops.  Day two on lower, rougher, fells had much more fine navigation and would have been very challenging if the clag had been lower.  Oh, I nearly forgot to mention the fantastic overnight camp in the beautiful Longsleddale valley.   A great event, well planned and executed, with free tea and coffee.  What more could you want!"
Stewart Bellamy

"A supremely well organised event with plenty of route choice and variation of terrain. One of my favourite mountain marathons yet."
Kersity Hewitson

"We at Rab® are delighted with how the event went and lots of tired but happy faces and weary legs bore testament to another successful event. Shane Ohly and his team at Ourea events succeeded in a seamless handover of this event from the previous organisers, the team delivered a great course in a stunning area with a friendly, competitive atmosphere… we even managed to continue our run of great weather."
Dan Thompson (Rab Marketing Manager)

"Shane Ohly as race director and the Ourea Events Team bring slick organisation to difficult terrain and along with the course planning skills of Charlie Sproson, these events are a must do on the calendar. It’s been a busy year for the team, it all started in January with Marmot Dark Mountains. The Rab Mountain Marathon concludes 2014 but already plans are in motion for 2015 and remember, it’s a Dragons Back year! Arguably one of the toughest challenges in the UK."
Ian Corless

"Congrats on another successful event for you and your team. We really appreciate all the effort that goes in from the organising team and volunteers and hope they too enjoyed the event. Adam and I had a great weekend as expected and were very surprised to have some half decent form despite the excuses! The post event analysis revealed the importance of being brave at the end of each day – which we were not! And the mistake we made in the order of mopping up the mid controls on Day 2 despite running hard. We certainly look forward to the next one!"
Andrew Higgins

"This was the first time that Ourea Events had organised the RAB, taking it over after several successful years from Dark & White. They had a hard act to follow, but managed to pull it off. Looking forward to more of the same next year, but first we've got the 2014 Dark Mountains to contend with…"
Simon Caldwell

"There are of course times during a two-day event where you question why you are there. Luckily these are outweighed by all the usual things people enjoy – the sense of adventure, the camaraderie, the stunning landscapes, the excitement of finding a control and realising that you can in fact navigate. But more than this, an event like this pushes your body and your mind into places most people never experience, at the height of what you are capable of, not only in endurance but in mental control…..It is about experiencing the things we will never tame, the slippery wet rock, the disorienting mist, the fierce wind, the majesty of the sun shining through the cloud onto the watery pools in the marsh, the vision of a single person running through a grand landscape, surrounded by mountains."
Alex Kendal

"Many thanks for organising such a fantastic event we've had a great weekend. Course was both challenging and interesting."
David Davis

"Huge thanks to you and your team for all your efforts this weekend. Thoroughly enjoyed myself as ever and I think you captured the friendly spirit of the Rab, though I think it was the toughest one yet."
Caroline Gilby

"Thank you so much for organising such a cracking event – it was my 4th RAB and the best yet. The whole event was relaxed, laid back and friendly – a big plus if you don't have a partner.  You seemed to personally work so hard to make things run smoothly – there never seemed to be a point over the entire weekend that you were not in the thick of things.  Your efforts were really appreciated and really added to the friendly reputation of the RAB.  The entire team you had were first class."
Phil Gray

"Thanks for a super RAB weekend and imagine my surprise and delight, not only to get a prize but also to see me and my darling daughter and team-mate, Katherine walker, on the report page. what a Fabulous photo, summing up the wild beauty of the race area. Thanks for a great weekend – not lost, no lost points, no rain and we are still friends! What's not to like about Rab?"
Elizabeth Green

"As for the event, this year’s courses were excellent – I still don’t know what the best route was on day 1, and the contrast between the big climbs and long legs on Day 1, and the shorter more technical stuff on Day 2 was good. The event centre and camp site were well organised, and I particularly like the new policy of giving seperate prizes for solo and team runners."
Richard Dearden

"I just really want to feedback to you guys what a great weekend i have just had on the Rab MM. its not been my best performance on a mm but it was probably the most enjoyable i have had. The whole weekend was run really slickly and the general atmosphere of low key and friendly was the kind of atmosphere I most appreciate. great courses, interesting route choices and nice vaired terrain. Even the portaloos were the best portaloos i have ever used! Thanks!!"
Andy Oliver

"Thank you for organising such a fantastic event, for it was such a brilliant experience for my 16 year old daughter. This was her first mountain marathon and she is now truly addicted and the dad and daughter team will be entering next year."
Andrew Leedham

"Can I thank you for the RAB MM – what a fantastic weekend. I had a wonderful time. As with all your events, it was superbly organised and exceptionally friendly."
Emily Ravenhill

"Thank you so much for a wonderful event and for all your hard work and that of the whole team. I was delighted to receive my prize voucher and very grateful to RAB for being so generous."
